Why we recommend engineered hardwood most often
Ask us what floor to put in a Tampa Bay living room and engineered hardwood is usually the first thing out of our mouths. It's real wood, not a photo printed on vinyl, built over a cross-layered plywood core that stays flat through the humidity swings of a Florida summer. Because nearly every home we work in from Brandon to Wesley Chapel sits on a concrete slab, engineered construction matches how these houses are actually built.
Solid hardwood needs a wood subfloor to nail into. Engineered doesn't - it glues directly to a slab or floats over underlayment, no wood subfloor required.

Built for humidity, not just tolerating it
The cross-layered core is engineered, hence the name, so the wood grain in each layer runs a different direction, canceling out the expansion and contraction that causes solid wood to cup or gap. That matters in a climate where indoor humidity can swing noticeably between a rainy August afternoon and a dry December week.
- Glues or floats directly over a concrete slab - no wood subfloor needed
- Resists cupping and gapping through rainy-season humidity swings
- Real wood wear layer on top - looks and feels identical to solid hardwood
- Available in wider planks (up to 9") than solid wood typically offers
- Can be sanded and refinished once or twice depending on wear-layer thickness

Species, widths, and finishes
Most of what we install is oak, but we also carry hickory, maple, and walnut engineered options for homeowners who want something different. Plank widths run from a traditional 3" up to 7-9" designer boards, and finishes range from clean matte oak to wire-brushed and hand-scraped European looks. If you'd rather explore solid wood for a pier-and-beam property, see real & solid hardwood flooring.

Installation over your slab
Every engineered hardwood job starts with a moisture test on the slab - a five-minute step that prevents callbacks. From there we glue down or float the floor depending on the product and your subfloor's flatness, handle baseboard removal and reinstall, and haul away your old flooring. Ask about matching hardwood stairs if your staircase needs to blend in too.

Engineered Hardwood - frequently asked questions
Because most the Greater Tampa Bay Area homes are built on concrete slabs, and engineered hardwood is designed to install directly over concrete while holding up to our humidity. Solid hardwood needs a wood subfloor most homes here don't have.
It's water-resistant, not waterproof. It handles everyday humidity and quick spills fine, but standing water from a hurricane-season leak should be dried up promptly to avoid damage.
If the wear layer is 3mm or thicker, yes - once or twice over its life. We check wear-layer thickness before recommending refinishing.
Both are real wood on the surface. Solid is one piece of wood nailed to a wood subfloor; engineered has a plywood core built to stay stable over concrete. See our solid hardwood page for when solid still makes sense.
It depends on the product and your slab's flatness - we'll recommend the right method during your free in-home estimate rather than defaulting to whichever is easier for us.
