Solid hardwood - the real thing, when your home can take it

Solid hardwood is a full 3/4" plank of 100% wood, nailed into a wood subfloor. It's the floor people picture when they picture "real hardwood," and it can be sanded and refinished many times over its life. The catch in the Greater Tampa Bay Area: solid hardwood needs a wood subfloor, and most homes built here since the 1970s sit on a concrete slab instead.

That doesn't take solid hardwood off the table - it just means we check first. If your home is one of the pier-and-beam or raised-foundation properties around older Tampa or Plant City, solid hardwood is a great fit and we install it regularly.

How to know if your home qualifies

During your free in-home estimate we check what's under your existing flooring before recommending anything. Find plywood over joists, and solid hardwood is on the table. Find a slab, and we'll steer you toward engineered hardwood instead, which gives you the same real-wood look without the risk of a humid Florida summer working against it.

  • Pier-and-beam and raised-foundation homes - solid hardwood works great
  • Slab-on-grade homes (most newer the Greater Tampa Bay Area construction) - engineered is the safer call
  • Second floors over a wood-framed first floor - usually fine for solid hardwood
  • Rooms with radiant heat or below-grade additions - engineered only

Species and finish options

Red and white oak remain our most-installed species, followed by hickory for households that want extra hardness and a busier grain. Maple gives a cleaner, more uniform look; walnut brings a warmer, darker tone for formal rooms. We bring real sample boards to your table so you're choosing an actual stain on actual wood, not a swatch on a screen.

Installation and long-term care in a humid climate

Even on a wood subfloor, solid hardwood needs to acclimate to Florida's humidity before installation, and we build that into every schedule. Once it's down, keeping indoor humidity reasonably steady with your A/C (which most the Greater Tampa Bay Area homes already run) keeps it stable for decades. When it eventually shows wear, hardwood refinishing brings it back without a full tear-out.

Real & Solid Hardwood Flooring - frequently asked questions

Not directly - solid hardwood has to be nailed to wood. If your the Greater Tampa Bay Area home is on a slab like most are, we'll recommend engineered hardwood instead, which delivers the same real-wood look and installs over concrete.

Most homeowners don't know off the top of their head, which is fine - we check during the free in-home estimate before recommending anything.

A quality 3/4" solid plank can typically be sanded and refinished 5 to 7 times over its life. When yours needs it, see our hardwood refinishing page.

It can, if indoor humidity swings widely - part of why solid hardwood is less common here than in drier climates. Running your A/C consistently, standard practice in every the Greater Tampa Bay Area home, keeps the wood stable.
